How The Traitors: Anywhere Works
How does a game actually work?
An organiser sets up a “Castle” and invites players to join. Once the minimum number of players has joined, the game can begin.
There are three group chats to be aware of. The first is the Castle group chat where all players are free to talk amongst themselves. The second is a private chat with the Host, us, where we give you your timetable and deliver private information or results. The third is only applicable to Traitors, who have their own Traitors’ Conclave where they can plot, scheme and decide their next moves.
At the start of each day, players will receive a timetable that lets them know when Missions, Mission Results, Round Table Discussions and Traitors’ Conclaves will take place. At key moments, the Host will prompt you to make decisions, complete tasks or reveal your suspicions.
How long does a game last, and how much of each day does it actually take?
Game lengths vary based on group sizes (the more players there are to Banish and Murder, the longer the game goes on for). For most groups, the game will last around a week in total.
The time that each player gets to play the game is determined by how long they remain in the game. No matter your role, your job is to stick around unscathed or undetected as long as possible. Don’t get Banished, Murdered or found out, and you’ll have a chance at being declared a winner!
The timetable extends throughout the day so even your busiest players have a chance to join in, so for example, players will have 5 1/2 hours to complete Missions and Round Table Discussions. You’re free to put in as much or as little time as you have available.
Who Can Play The Traitors: Anywhere
Who can actually play? Is there an age limit, do we all need to be in the UK, and can a castle mix people from different places?
The Traitors: Anywhere is currently available for purchase in the UK and Ireland only. For their safety, players must be 16+ years of age to play.
Players can take part from anywhere while they play. However, players who are abroad for part or all of the game will need to consider timezone differences, as these won’t be automatically calculated.
How many people do we need? Is there a minimum and a maximum?
A Castle can hold a minimum of 8 players and a maximum of 30. Larger groups can split into smaller ones and set up multiple games to run at the same time.
Do we play with our own friends and family, or with strangers? And if I cannot find enough people, is there any way for me to join a game?
The Traitors: Anywhere is not a game for strangers. Organisers decide who has access to the “Castle”, so you can only play with friends, family, colleagues or acquaintances who you know.
The only players who are excluded from the game are players under 16 years of age.
Could we run this for a work team, a stag do, a birthday or a community event?
Yes, you can!
Gameplay unfolds over the course of around one week, with larger groups taking slightly longer to complete. You may want to time it to coincide with important dates or events or extend the celebrations beyond just one day.
Do we all need to be online at the same time?
It’s not necessary for everyone to be watching the Castle group chat all day every day (although, you can if you want!), but you’ll want to be around for the key moments outlined in your timetable.
The timetable begins at 07:45 when a Mission becomes available and concludes at 21:30 with the Traitors’ conclave (applicable to Traitors only). In between times or outside of those hours, the Castle group chat is open for discussion.
What about night shifts, time zones, and the friend who never checks their phone until nine?
As the game will currently only be available for purchase in the UK and Ireland, the timezone is set to BST/GMT.
Players who are located in different timezones for part or all of the game should take timezone changes into consideration.
The game has been built to fit into your daily life, so if you’re especially busy, you might want to let your teammates know. We’ve found that even accidental “ghosting” has led to wrongful accusations during our playtests, but then, so has flooding the Castle group chat with messages. Suspicion can fall anywhere...
Questions About The Traitors: Anywhere Gameplay
How are the Traitors chosen?
The Host randomly selects the Traitors from all the players who answered they’d like to be one in their introductory survey. Even if you’re assigned as a Faithful, a Traitors may have the chance to recruit you,, so nothing’s set in stone.
Players who are Banished or Murdered will have their roles revealed when they exit the game; the remaining players’ roles are revealed during the finale.
Can I do anything to improve my chances of being a Traitor?
No, the Traitors are selected randomly by The Host. If it isn’t you the first time, you’ll have to wait for your game to end and join a new game to have another attempt – or hope that the Traitors try to recruit you.
Will the others ever find out what I was?
They certainly will. While you’re able to hide in plain sight throughout the game, the finale tells all.
If you’re Murdered or Banished before the finale, your role will be announced at your departure.
Do the Traitors get somewhere secret to plot?
Yes, they certainly do. Traitors get their own secret Conclave chat to plot in together, away from the Host and the main group chat.
How do the Traitors murder someone without exposing themselves in the main group?
The Traitors use their private Conclave chat to discuss who’s next.
Once they’ve made up their minds, there’s no going back: that player’s minutes are numbered. They’ll tell the Host, who then delivers the sad news to the victim. The victim will have a chance to give their last words, and tomorrow morning, they won’t show up at Breakfast. Nobody in the Castle will have any idea until then.
What are the Missions actually like?
Without giving away any spoilers, we can tell you that Missions unfold in two places: a player’s private chat with the Host, and in the general group chat.
The Host will send you your Mission, and tell you how long you have to complete it. Once you accept your Mission, you’ll be sent details of what to do next. In some instances, you may want to go over to the main group chat to get help, other times, you’ll have to work alone.
We don’t want to spoil the fun, so we can’t tell you what the Missions are yet. We can tell you that they’ll occasionally involve the introductory survey you complete at the beginning of the game, as well as puzzles and challenges that will test your teamwork.
You will be told when you’re playing for a Shield.
How does The Round Table work over text?
The Round Table has plenty of time allocated to it, so as soon as it’s open, you’re able to lodge your vote with the Host and discuss your thoughts with the Castle group chat.
Who is acting strangely? Who has something to hide? What might be someone’s motive? It’s your job to ask – and find answers to these questions if you’re a Faithful, and if you’re a Traitor, pin the blame on someone else!
How do we vote?
The Host will ask you who in the group chat you would like to Banish and give a reason why.
Before you lock in your vote, you can go back and forth in your Castle group chat as long as it takes to hear what your fellow players think until the vote closes.
If I am murdered or banished, is it all over for me? Or do I get to stay and watch the chaos I leave behind?
Your role as a Faithful or Traitor will be over, but you can certainly stay to watch the chaos in the Castle if you like. You will be informed of key events in the game and be invited to the finale where all will be revealed by the Host.
Murdered players will have the option to complete Missions to accumulate a personal highscore for their own prize pot as a Ghost. The best performing Ghost may win a free pass at the next game, so it’s worth haunting in the background even if you can no longer influence the game.
Does the game need one of us to run it as host or referee? And can the person who set it up still play properly?
We are your Host and all players will each have a separate, private conversation with us. You’ll talk to the Host to vote, write Diary entries, complete Missions and more.
The organiser is a player like anyone else, either a Traitor or a Faithful. It’ll be up to you to figure out which…
With no faces to read and no body language, how does anyone actually catch a Traitor over text?
If you live, work or meet up with your fellow players in person, you might just start scrutinising them more than before, but the majority of your deducing will take place in the Castle group chat.
Defend yourself, accuse others, tell everyone what you’re having for dinner or simply lurk waiting for someone to say something you find dodgy - any and all of the above can look like Traitor behaviour once suspicions start to grow.
How you communicate is up to you: leave voice notes, use emojis, write an essay or stay quiet when it matters.
Is there a prize for winning, and what does the winner actually get?
As a team, you’ll try to build your prize pot of gold up as high as you can so the winners - whether they are Traitors or Faithfuls - have a nice score to show on the overall leaderboard.
Other prizes, such as free passes for another game, are also up for grabs. We’ll be sharing more information about this very soon.
Can we play more than once? Could I even be in two games at the same time with different groups?
Each game of The Traitors: Anywhere is completely unique, even if you play multiple times with the same people. New Missions, new discussions and new role assignments mean no two games will ever be the same.
Purchase multiple passes to join more games to play at the same time or save your passes for a re-match.
Is this inside normal WhatsApp or a separate app to download? And will people I do not know end up seeing my phone number?
The entire game unfolds through WhatsApp, so you will need an account as well as WiFi or cellular data to play. Only join Castles with players you know and trust, or who you're happy to share your information with.
Pricing and Pre-Sale Questions
How do we get our whole group in?
Get everyone to sign up to the waitlist! Once the game is on-sale, one person can pay for the entire Castle, or players can buy their own individual passes.
Does every single player need to sign up, or can one of us sort it for everyone?
All players need to be signed up individually to be eligible for pre-sale discounted rates and early access.
Once the pre-sale ends, players will still be able to join your Castle, but they will have to pay full price for their own pass. Discounts are not available for organisers purchasing passes for an entire Castle.
What does it cost and how does paying work?
You’ll receive a separate email about pricing once we can reveal the pre-sale date, so make sure you keep an eye on your inbox!
For now, we can tell you that players will be able to purchase their own pass or passes for a whole Castle. Discounts will also be available for individual players to use for multiple games.
When can we actually play? When do tickets go on sale, and once we have bought, how soon can our game begin?
We’ll be posting a puzzle that reveals the pre-sale date in the coming weeks to our Instagram, and we’ll also be revealing it in your inbox. We can’t say any more just yet, but we promise secrets are about to be revealed soon.
Niche Questions We Couldn’t Categorise
Will The Traitors: Anywhere be faithful to the show?
We want to keep some parts of the game secret until you get a chance to play, but we can tell you that the game includes some tried and tested plot twists you may recognize from the world of The Traitors. For instance, players may get the opportunity to use a Dagger or Poison, among other things…
Can you quote Metallica so we know you aren’t a bot or AI?
Let me ask you a question. Will you be the Master of The Puppets? Only one way to find out.
I can’t wait to start
We can’t wait to share it with you!
Is it as intense as it looks?
The finale always results in incredible GIF sharing and I will likely never forget some of the submissions my colleagues have made during Missions. No spoilers, but one involved a soundbite.
I have one burning question; how soon can I start accusing my friends of being Traitors?
We love this question so even though it is the one question we can’t answer definitively yet, I will tell you personally that very, very, very soon, we’ll be sharing more information. Stick with us, there’s more to come!
